Markers: Shinkai et al. (2011) reported results of in vitro studies showing that three missense SNPs in porcine toll-like receptors ("TLR5(R148L), TLR5(P402L), and TLR2(V703M) attenuated the responses to SC by the cells transfected with the TLR genes", providing circumstantial evidence for inherited resistance to SC. Muneta et al. (2012) developed a genotyping test for the second of these SNPs "(TLR5) (C1205T; P402L)", which will enable investigation of the effect of this SNP on resistance. Miguel and Mingala (2019) reported the frequency of "resistant" and susceptible" alleles at the BPI locus in a range of pig breeds, but provided no data on resistance or susceptibility in the genotyped pigs. The original report that described these alleles (Tuggle et al., 2004) actually shows that genetic variation at this locus is one of an unknown number of factors contributing to variation in resistance to Salmonella infection. It can be concluded that the search is still on for useful markers for resistance to Salmonella infection.
