OMIA:000320-9685 : Ears, four in Felis catus (domestic cat)

Categories: Hearing / vestibular / ear phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: Autosomal recessive

Considered a defect: yes

Key variant known: no

Species-specific description: As stated by Little (1957): "Certain attributes of the four-eared character are interesting. 1. It has always been bilateral, both as regards ears and eyes. This is unusual in mammalian morphological mutants. 2. It appears to affect the physiological activity and temperament, making the animal less active and more lethargic, although body size seems to be normal. 3. The eyeballs may be greatly reduced and otherwise affected. The neuro-anatomy of the mutant would be of great interest for further study, as would its behavior."

Mapping: "The mutant appears to be genetically independent of A, tabby, and sp, piebald spotting." (Little, 1957)

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
