Species-specific description: Lustrous, light-yellow wool, lacking crimp, occurring in Merinos. This trait is characteristic of breeds such as Lincoln and Leicester, but is not normally present in Merinos. Short (1958) presented convincing evidence of autosomal dominant inheritance of this trait in Merinos. Several independent occurrences of very similar mutations in Border Leicester-Romney crosses and in Romney flocks in New Zealand were reported by Blair (1990). Lustrous wool is very similar to, and could be the same as, silky wool (see entry for Silky wool).
