Species-specific description: A disease of young pigs, resulting in permanent deformities of the facial and turbinate bones. At one time, it was thought that no infectious agent was involved, hence this entry. However, it is now known that the disorder is caused by Pasteurella multocida, serotype D, and Bordetella bronchiseptica. Resistance to atrophic rhinitis is multifactorial, with heritability of the order of 20%, and negligible phenotypic and genetic correlation with production traits (Lundeheim, 1979).
