OMIA:001276-9940 : Facial eczema in Ovis aries (sheep)

In other species: taurine cattle

Categories: Integument (skin) phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: no

Mode of inheritance: Multifactorial

Considered a defect: yes

Key variant known: no

Inheritance: Morris et al. (1995) reported a heritability of 45% for liability to this disease.

Markers: By genotyping sheep from lines selected for resistance and susceptibility to facial eczema (FE) with the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip (yielding 50,975 informative SNPs), Phua et al. (2014; Anim Genet 45:240-7) identified "at least eight genomic regions that underwent a selection sweep in the FE lines". In a subsequent paper, Phua et al. (2014; Anim Genet 45: 559-64) reported the development of "a genome-enabled prediction approach to screen for FE-tolerant sheep", based on genotypes from the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip, providing "genomic prediction for FE . . . for the Romney breed [with] . . . an accuracy of 0.38". From a GWAS on 2669 sheep, "genotyped with either the Ovine Infinium® HD SNP BeadChip (n=137 animals; 606,006 makers; “HD”) or the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip (n=2532 animals; 53,903 markers; “50K”)", McRae et al. (2021) identified "Two regions on chromosomes 15 and 24 . . . which explain 5% and 1% of the phenotypic variance in the response to FE [Facial Eczema], respectively. The region on chromosome 15 contains the β‐globin locus. Of the significant SNPs in the region, one is a missense variant within the haemoglobin subunit β (HBB) gene."

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
