Considered a defect: yes

Key variant known: no

History: As summarised by Muñoz et al. (2017): "The hamster has been previously described as a paroxysmal dystonia model, but our strain is currently recognized as a model of audiogenic seizures (AGS). The original first epileptic hamster appeared spontaneously at the University of Valladolid, where it was known as the GPG:Vall line, and was transferred to the University of Salamanca where a new strain was developed, named GASH:Sal."

Markers: Díaz-Casado et al. (2020) "performed whole exome sequencing (WES) in GASH/Sal animals and their corresponding controls to identify and characterize the mutational landscape of the GASH/Sal strain . . . [from which] 3 high-impact and 15 moderate-impact variants were identified", thereby providing strong evidence of the mutifactorial nature of this disorder. Díaz-Rodríguez et al. (2023) "addressed the influence of the missense single-nucleotide polymorphism (C9586732T, p.His289Tyr) in the glutamate receptor ionotropic kainate-1 (Grik1) gene and its implications for the GASH/Sal seizure susceptibility. ... [The] study reinforces the substantial body of evidence implicating GluK1 receptors in the mechanisms underlying seizures."

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
