Cross-species summary: A cleft in the skull involving one or more of the bones of the cranial cavity. If meninges (the membranes covering the brain) protrude through the cleft, the disorder is called meningocele. If meninges and brain tissue protrudes, it is called encephalocele or meningo-encephalocele. Since these terms are often used interchangably, all categories have been combined into this one entry.

Inheritance: The most definitive inheritance studies in pigs, by Wijeratne et al. (1974) and Vogt et al. (1986), showed that the disorder is familial, but is not due to a single gene.

Prevalence: Vogt et al. (1986) presented extensive incidence data, showing differences between breeds and between years, with an overall incidence of 0.12% in the University of Missouri-Columbia herd.
