OMIA:000961-9940 : Copper deficiency, susceptibility to in Ovis aries (sheep)

Categories: Homeostasis / metabolism phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Cross-species summary: Incoordination progressing to paralysis, blindness and death, associated with a deficiency of copper, which causes dysmyelination of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This phene was renamed from 'Swayback' to 'Copper deficiency, susceptibility to' [21/10/2022]

Species-specific name: Swayback, sway back

Species-specific description: This disorder is due to a deficiency of copper in the diet. There is substantial genetic variation in ability to withstand a copper deficiency, and hence in resistance to swayback (Wiener, 1966).

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
