OMIA:001265-9913 : Preputial prolapse/eversion in Bos taurus (taurine cattle)

Categories: Reproductive system phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing

Prevalence: In a survey of "more than 100 French breeders, agricultural engineers and agricultural technicians for putative observation of additional phenotypes associated with polledness", Allais-Bonnet et al. (2013) learned of an apparent association of Preputial prolapse/eversion with polledness. Examining this more closely, they observed a strong association between this trait and polledness in Charolais bulls (caused by the Celtic polled allele), but not in other bulls with either the Celctic or Friesian polled alleles. They concluded that this trait "is more likely specified by another locus in moderate linkage disequilibrium with the Celtic mutation or by other breed-specific loci interacting with the Polled loci".
