OMIA:001943-9940 : Fecundity, generic in Ovis aries (sheep)

In other species: dog , pig , taurine cattle , indicine cattle (zebu) , goat , rabbit

Categories: Reproductive system phene

Links to MONDO diseases: No links.

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: no

Species-specific description: Several genes (e.g. BMP15, BMPR1B and GDF9) and alleles have been identified to impact fecundity/litter size in sheep and are listed as separate entries in OMIA. Any reference related to fecundity that are not related to these known genes or alleles are listed here.

Markers: Kang et al. (2021) "hypothesized that the polymorphisms of KDM3B gene were associated with sheep reproduction traits. A 7-nt nucleotide sequence variant (rs1088697156) within KDM3Bgene was identified in a total of 888 individuals, including the Australian White (AUW) sheep and Lanzhou Fat-tailed (LFT) sheep. II (insertion/insertion) and ID (insertion/deletion) genotypes of 7-nt variant were detected, which were at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) in detected breeds. Association analysis illustrated the 7-nt variant was significantly associated with the littersize, duration of pregnancy, live lamb number, live lamb rate, stillbirth number, stillbirth rate of average and different parity (P<0.05) in AUW sheep. Moreover, ‘ID’ was the dominant genotype with excellent consistency in reproductive traits." Li et al. (2021) "explored potential polymorphisms of the sheep TSHR gene, and a 29 bp nucleotide sequence variant (rs1089565492) was identified in the AUW sheep. ... Association analysis results showed the 29 bp variant was significantly associated with the litter size of the AUW sheep (p < 0.05)." Ma et al. (2022) "sequenced all coding regions of the LEPR gene of Mongolia sheep, and nine novel variants of the LEPR gene were detected by direct sequencing. Among them, the synonymous c.240C > T and c.279C > T mutations were significantly associated with the litter sizes of Mongolia ewes (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively) and Ujimqin ewes (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively)."

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
