Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Considered a defect: yes

Cross-species summary: Congenital lack of pigment in all parts of the body. See also Skin colour, albinism, generic

History: As reported by Laikre et al. (1996), "Albinism first occurred in the [Nordic zoos] population in 1972 when an albino cub was born in Helsinki zoo in Finland. Since then, at least an additional 11 albino individuals have been born. "

Inheritance: Laikre et al. (1996): "We have not performed a thorough inheritance study of the albinism in the brown bear, but there are no indications of a different mode of inheritance [i.e. not autosomal recessive] in the present population. "

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
