OMIA:001119-9913 : Abomasum, displaced in Bos taurus (taurine cattle)

In other species: sheep , water buffalo

Categories: Digestive / alimentary phene

Mendelian trait/disorder: no

Mode of inheritance: Multifactorial

Disease-related: yes

Key variant known: no

Cross-species summary: The abomasum is the fourth stomach in ruminants, often called the "true" stomach because of its structural and functional homology with the stomach of non-ruminants. Soon after parturition, the abomasum sometimes becomes distended either to the left (left abomasal displacement) or to the right (right abomasal displacement), resulting in anorexia and acetonaemia.

Species-specific description: In a large-scale study of more than 12000 Holstein cows in New York State, Detilleux et al. (1997) showed that cows with left displaced abomasum yielded substantially less milk (557 kg), and were twice as likely to have another disease.
