OMIA:001201-10036 : Coat colour, orange in Mesocricetus auratus (golden hamster)

In other species: domestic cat

Categories: Pigmentation phene

Single-gene trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: X-linked

Disease-related: no

Key variant known: no

Species-specific name: Sex-linked yellow

Species-specific symbol: Sly

Mapping: Alizadeh et al. (2009) reported that the phenotypically similar phenes Orange in cats and Sex-linked yellow in golden hamsters map to "nonhomologous regions of the X chromosome", In other words, it is likely that these highly similar phenes are encoded by different genes.
Toh et al. (2025) confirmed the conclusion of Alizadeh et al. (2009): "Using a high-quality chromosome-scale sequence assembly of the golden hamster genome, we examined whether the genomic position of Arhgap36 [the gene now known to be responsible for Orange in cats] corresponds to the genetic location of Sly [sex-linked yellow in golden hamsters]. This analysis showed that the two loci are located in different regions of the X chromosome". The identity of the Sly gene has still to be discovered.
