This disorder was first reported by Pearce (1938). The occurrence of the same phenotype in New Zealand white rabbits in South Africa was reported by Pulker et al. (2011).
Inheritance:
In two 1960 papers, Pearce presented evidence of single-locus autosomal recessive inheritance.
