OMIA:001698-9031 : Vulture hocks in Gallus gallus (chicken)

Categories: Integument (skin) phene

Mendelian trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: Autosomal recessive

Disease-related: yes

Key variant known: no

Species-specific symbol: v

Species-specific description: Dorshorst et al. (2010) describe this trait as " feathers in the crural feather tract of the tibia are increased in length and rigidity, taking on the appearance of a flight feather".

Inheritance: Davenport (1906) postulated single-locus autosonal recessive inheritance. Danforth (1929) provided evidence for incomplete dominance, but Jull and Dunn (1931) confirmed Davenport's (1906) results. The symbol v was assigned by Hutt (1949). (Somes, 1990)

Mapping: Using an Illumina GoldenGate BeadXpress 384 SNP panel, Dorshorst et al. (2010) provided evidence that this trait is located on chromosome GGA13, with the strongest association being at 15.6Mb. However, they note that it is possible that this locus may be located on a chromosome not represented in this SNP panel.
