Species-specific description: Zhang et al. (2023): "The Beijing white quail is a new mutant strain in feather color and originated from Korean quail (Coturnix coturnix) in the 1970s. Young Beijing white quail have light yellow feathers and dark yellow stripes on their backs (Zhang et al, 2013). After first molting, the feathers become pure white, albeit with light yellow stripes on the back and both wings of the quail ... . The eyes of the Beijing white quail are red, which is obviously different from the black eyes of the Korean quail (Wu et al, 2018). ... we provide evidence that variations in an intron of HERC2 and upstream of OCA2 can decrease OCA2 mRNA expression. In turn, this effect likely underlies the diluted plumage color and red eyes in Beijing white quail."

Genetic engineering: Unknown
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
