OMIA:002896-749190 : Skin colour, SCARB1-related in Cyprinus carpio 'color' (Oujiang color common carp)

Categories: Pigmentation phene

Links to possible relevant human trait(s) and/or gene(s) in OMIM: 601040 (gene)

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Disease-related: no

Species-specific description: Du et al. (2021) "showed that red and white coloration followed typical Mendelian inheritance in color common carp and that red coloration was determined by the carotenoids rather than the pteridine pigments. The two Scarb1 genes might act as a “switch” in the red carotenoid ornamentation in fish by mediating the transport process of carotenoids and thus controlling the formation of red coloration."

Inheritance: Wang et al. (2008) reported the results of an artificial reciprocal cross of whole red (WR) and whole white (WW) body colour fish. The trait followed the typical Mendelian inheritance patterns in the F2 generation (WR:WW ≈ 3:1)

Genetic engineering: Yes - in addition to the occurrence of natural variants, variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
