Categories: Pigmentation phene
Single-gene trait/disorder: unknown
Disease-related: no
Cross-species summary: Down feathers are fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers and are the only feathers in young chicks.
Mapping: Kudinov et al. (2019) mapped day-old chick down feather colour in Russian White chickens to a region on chromosome 2.
Molecular basis: Yevshin et al. (2024) "identified an [Russian Snow White] RSW-specific missense mutation in the RALYL gene [chr2:122881444:G>T; p.(R643L)], presumably causing the snow-white color of the day-old chicks ... ."
