Single-gene trait/disorder: unknown

Disease-related: yes

Cross-species summary: This phene includes information about XX differences of sexual development (XX DSD) in animals with an XX karyotype for which the causal variant has so far not been identified. This phene has been renamed from 'XX testicular DSD (Disorder of Sexual Development)' [29/09/2023] and was previously known as Sex reversal: XX male or SRY-negative XX sex reversal.

Species summary: Watson et al. (1997) reported a red kangaroo with a karyotype of 20, XX and the SRY gene was absent on PCR.  [IT thanks Emma Faull for contributions to this entry in September 2025]

Clinical features: A red kangaroo with DSD was described by Watson et al. (1997) to have "no pouch or teats and no scrotum or penis. It had a small hairless area fringed by hair that was longer than the rest of the abdominal hair … which rendered it similar in apperance to the pouch area of a female of the same age when standing".
