OMIA:001252-8843 : Feather colour, recessive white in Anser anser (domestic goose)

In other species: rock pigeon , chicken , common canary

Categories: Pigmentation phene

Single-gene trait/disorder: yes

Mode of inheritance: Autosomal co-dominant

Disease-related: no

Key variant known: yes

Year key variant first reported: 2020

Molecular basis: Xi et al. (2020) identified "a 14-bp insertion (NW_013185915.1: g. 750,748–750,735 insertion. CACAGGTGAGCTCT) in exon 3 of EDNRB2 . . . [that] was homozygous in all the white geese we detected and heterozygous in gray geese, indicating that this mutation is recessive. Furthermore, this 14-bp insertion leads to a frameshift mutation in the EDNRB2 coding region and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay." Yang et al. (2024) report that "the gray plumage color was codominant to the white color in [Wugangtong] WGT geese, and plumage color variations were controlled by EDNRB2. ... Sanger sequencing of the region surrounding the EDNRB2 gene identified a 14-bp insertion within exon 3 [previously reported by Xi et al. 2020] as the causal mutation. The heterozygosity of this 14-bp insertion and wild-type alleles was completely associated with the Wb phenotype [grey with white breast circle], thereby substantiating the codominant nature of the G [solid grey] and W [white] phenotypes."

Breeds: Gang, China (Goose (domestic)) (VBO_0009987), Wugang Copper, China (Goose (domestic)) (VBO_0009999).
Breeds in which the phene has been documented. (If a likely causal variant has been documented for the phene, see the variant table breeds in which the variant has been reported).

Variants

By default, variants are sorted chronologically by year of publication, to provide a historical perspective. Readers can re-sort on any column by clicking on the column header. Click it again to sort in a descending order. To create a multiple-field sort, hold down Shift while clicking on the second, third etc relevant column headers.

WARNING! Inclusion of a variant in this table does not automatically mean that it should be used for DNA testing. Anyone contemplating the use of any of these variants for DNA testing should examine critically the relevant evidence (especially in breeds other than the breed in which the variant was first described). If it is decided to proceed, the location and orientation of the variant sequence should be checked very carefully.

Since October 2021, OMIA includes a semiautomated lift-over pipeline to facilitate updates of genomic positions to a recent reference genome position. These changes to genomic positions are not always reflected in the ‘acknowledgements’ or ‘verbal description’ fields in this table.
