Considered a defect: yes

Mapping: A GWAS conducted by Stromberg et al. (2019) failed to reveal any SNPs with genome-wide significance, but "5 of the top 9 SNPs were in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)". Subsequent association testing of several canine MHC (DLA) alleles revealed some alleles as potential risk and protective factors. From this, Stromberg et al. (2019) concluded that "Although far from definitive, association of SARDS with alleles of immunologic importance further supports the hypothesis that autoimmunity may play a role in the pathogenesis of SARDS."
