Cross-species summary: A cleft in the skull involving one or more of the bones of the cranial cavity. If meninges (the membranes covering the brain) protrude through the cleft, the disorder is called meningocele. If meninges and brain tissue protrudes, it is called encephalocele or meningo-encephalocele. Since these terms are often used interchangably, all categories have been combined into this one entry.
