Species-specific description: Koprich et al. (2016) "validated surgical and vector parameters to define a means to provide a robust over-expression of alpha-synuclein [in cynomolgus macaque] ... . ... an AAV1/2 vector incorporating strong transcription and transduction regulatory elements was used to deliver the gene for the human A53T mutation of alpha-synuclein."
Rico et al. (2024) used "retrogradely-spreading adeno-associated viral vector serotype 9 coding for the alpha-synuclein A53T mutated gene (AAV9-SynA53T) to induce a widespread synucleinopathy of cortical and subcortical territories innervating the putamen" in cynomolgus macaques.
Liu et al. (2024) "report the development of a cynomolgus monkey model of [Parkinson’s disease] PD that combines adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated overexpression of α-synuclein into the substantia nigra with an injection of poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) into the striatum."
This phene includes references to studies involving gene edited or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Genetic engineering: Yes - variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
