Species-specific description: Ma et al. (2017) used the CRISPR/Cas9 system to produce thirty-four transgenic sheep which can produce melatonin-enriched milk through the integration of exogenous AANAT and/or ASMT genes into their mammary epithelial cells. Seven sheep carried transgenic AANAT, two carried ASMT, and 25 carried both of AANAT and ASMT genes. “In transgenic offspring, the upregulated gene expressions of AANAT and ASMT rendered the elevated melatonin production in milk.” This phene has been created using genetically modified organisms (GMO).
