Cross-species summary: A common form of arteriosclerosis in which deposits of yellowing plaques (atheromas) containing cholesterol and other lipid material are formed within the arteries.
Species-specific description: A strain of pig that spontaneously develops atherosclerosis has been developed by selection (Skold and Getty, 1961; Gal et al., 1990), and is used as an animal model for medical studies of the same disease in humans.
