OMIA:001744-9925 : Mastitis, susceptibility/resistance to in Capra hircus (goat)

In other species: taurine cattle , indicine cattle (zebu) , sheep , rabbit , water buffalo

Categories: Immune system phene

Single-gene trait/disorder: no

Mode of inheritance: Multifactorial

Disease-related: no

Key variant known: no

Molecular basis: Feng et al. (2024) created gene-edited dairy goats (GED) via 'targeted integration of an innate inflammatory regulatory sequence (IRS) into the promoter region of the lysozyme (LYZ) gene. Upon Escherichia Coli (E. coli) mammary gland infection, GED goats exhibited increased LYZ expression, showing robust anti-mastitis capabilities, mitigating PANoptosis activation, and alleviating blood-milk-barrier (BMB) damage.' This study involves genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Genetic engineering: Yes - in addition to the occurrence of natural variants, variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
