Mendelian trait/disorder: yes
Disease-related: no
Key variant known: yes
Year key variant first reported: 2016
Cross-species summary: Long hair = angora
Species-specific description: This phene includes references to studies involving genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Markers: Li et al. (2022) reported a naturally-occurring 507bp deletion roughly 14kb downstream of FGF5 that may be associated with fleece length in goats.
Molecular basis: Wang et al. (2016) reported that "the disruption of FGF5 [by CRISPR/Cas9] results in increased number of second hair follicles and enhanced fiber length in Cas9-mediated goats, suggesting more cashmere will be produced"
Genetic engineering:
Yes - in addition to the occurrence of natural variants, variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
