Categories: Pigmentation phene

Mendelian trait/disorder: unknown

Disease-related: no

Species-specific name: false gravid spot

Species-specific description: Dodge et al. (2024) "find that ∼40% of X. birchmanni males develop a “false gravid spot,” a melanic pigmentation pattern that mimics the “pregnancy spot” associated with sexual maturity in female live-bearing fish."

Mapping: Dodge et al.  (2024) used genome-wide association mapping to map the false gravid spot phenotype to an intergenic region upstream of kitlga and long-read sequencing identfied complex structural rearrangements between alternate alleles at this locus.
