Single-gene trait/disorder: yes

Disease-related: unknown

Key variant known: yes

Year key variant first reported: 2025

Cross-species summary: Congenital lack of pigment in most parts of the body. Due to a non-functional form of the enzyme tyrosinase. Also known as oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), acromelanism and as the Himalayan coat-colour pattern.

Species summary: Takizawa et al. (2025) used CRISPR/Cas9 technology to introduce TYR variants and created "two Tyr-mutated founders. Mating these two to wild-type 13-LGS resulted in 22 offspring, of which five were genotyped with either a 17-bp deletion, 1-bp insertion, or 7-bp deletion Tyr mutation." This phene includes references to studies involving gene edited or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Genetic engineering: Yes - variants have been created artificially, e.g. by genetic engineering or gene editing
Have human generated variants been created, e.g. through genetic engineering and gene editing
